The Maltsters Arms, Tuckenhay, Totnes, Devon, TQ9 7EQ Opening times : All day everyday
Our History ......
The Maltsters Arms is reported to originate from the late 18th Century when the quay of Tuckenhay was bustling with activity. Various commodities such as lime, corn, paper, cider and malt were transported by water to and from the hamlet.
By the mid 1800’s cider and malt were produced on the quayside. William Manning and John Earle owned a cider works and Thomas Edmond’s malt house gave the name to the Maltsters Arms.
Trade continued to flourish until the beginning of the second World War. The last ship of any size to arrive at the quayside was the 240 ton coaster Reedness in 1939. After the War the principal activity at Bow Creek was cider making, still using water transport but this time by barge.
Tuckenhay had the first gas lighting in the world before Manchester and London. The original gas engine house can be seen just 200 yards up the road. Bow Creek has in the past been associated with smuggling as the upper reaches of the Dart are so private and seculded.
The Maltsters was first made famous by the flamboyant TV chef Keith Floyd. He bought the pub in 1989 and sold up in 1996.
Floyd added his own character and style to the pub which still remains today. Just walking around the pub and particularly in each of the themed rooms you will see many ‘Floydisms’.
We were all very sad to hear the news of Floyd passing away aged 65 on Monday 14 September 2009 and hope you will join us in raising a glass on his behalf.
Denise and Quentin Thwaites bought the pub from Floyd in 1996 and ran it successfully until they retired in July 2011. We wish them all the best and hope they enjoy sailing on to new adventures in their much loved boat.
A New Chapter ......
George Welsh bought the Maltsters and took the helm in July 2011 and would like to extend a warm welcome to all customers old and new.
George is enjoying Tuckenhay immensely and has brought a new energy and lease of life to the Maltsters. He has even invested in a boat and can be seen exploring the river when he is not busy running the pub.
George has introduced an exciting, new menu with includes ‘Catch of the Day’ and many other mouthwatering, imaginative dishes. See our new menu.
We are very keen to listen to suggestions and comments that will improve the Maltsters experience from our guests, so if you have enjoyed your visit or wish to make a review please click HERE and let us know your thoughts.
